Texas House Passes Progressive Telecommunications Measure |
| 7.18.05 |
| |
This message is sent to Verizon retirees in Texas on behalf of Steve Banta, Group President – Southwest Region.
In a special session on Sunday, the Texas House passed a bill that updates regulation of telecommunications in the state, including allowing a single statewide franchise for companies entering the cable television business.
The Senate previously passed the bill but now must vote on amendments added by the House. If approved, the bill will go to the governor for his signature. For Verizon the legislation means we would not have to obtain cable TV franchises in local jurisdictions throughout the state to provide FiOS TV services.
This is another positive step toward the day when consumers in Texas will have a choice for their cable service. The action of the Texas House brings us closer to a final decision on this legislation. We hope the Senate will concur in a timely manner and we can soon bring a new option for consumers who have been held captive by cable TV companies for too long.
I appreciate the efforts of those employees and retirees who wrote letters and called their legislators during the regular legislative session. You helped reinforce the need for Telecom reform in Texas and the desire by all consumers for choices in cable television service. |
